Our Wild Northwest | Conservation Northwest
As a wrap to 2023, we reflect on some of our work over the years. Together, we can advocate for sustaining a thriving ecosystem and ensure our wildlife and wildlands truly stay wild. Perhaps a home is made best by the one that's shared.

Virtual Fencing | The Next Evolution in Range Management

Good for wildlife, good for land, and good for our local rancher's pocketbooks, virtual fencing is a win-win-win situation - giving it every reason to make its big debut in Washington. So how does the technology work? What problem is it trying to solve? Virtual fencing is GPS technology that allows cattle ranchers to build 'virtual' fences instead of physical barriers. This could be the next ev...
Wild Ways: Why Keeping Washington's Habitat Connected Matters

Animals rely on movement to survive, in pursuit of food, resources, and seasonal habitat. As Washington's human population grows, the state's natural habitats grow increasingly fragmented. Habitat connectivity is about ensuring animals have the freedom of movement they need to thrive, and Conservation Northwest is working hard with our partners to help improve those connections across Washingto...

    Great ...their Ranchers will get something else to shoot instead of the Wolves we sent to replace their extinct ones. We feed the ducks at the cottage all year and the hunters kill 75 a day each as they migrate south. No more animals to the states until they make it illegal to kill them . Who gave you permission to commit this act? It is a horrible thing that YOU are doing. I feel sorry for the poor Wild Cat that I have NEVER seen in the wild .

    The problem with todays science is they throw out any evidence that does not jive with their agenda/objectives. Depending on the field of study it can have drastic consequences. I'm not saying all of it is but anybody with a few good brain cells can figure it out pretty easily. $ talks and you have to study the way the $ wants you to or you will not get any.

    Wow, outstanding film - so informative and inspiring. Conservation Northwest's work on wildlife connectivity is the main reason I've been a monthly donor for many years. I'm beginning to see wildlife connectivity as one of the most important conservation projects to support, the one project with a wide range of conservation benefits. This short film helped me understand just how important it is and how this single idea can bring enormous benefit to so many of our wildlife species. Thank you CNW!

    I don't believe the line that bears prefer rotten meat over fresh meat. I think it's more a case of preferring easy meat over high-effort meat. It's not hard to find video footage of bears chasing and killing elk calves while the elk are small enough to catch. You can also find footage of them attempting to take bison calves. Even instances of bears taking injured adult caribou are available. To say that bears don't take prey is wishful thinking. Bears are omnivores, and opportunists.

    • @KAT-dg6el
      @KAT-dg6el 5 месяцев назад

      Your comment doesn’t make any sense. They said the Bears will come in and kill and eat the small calves. So of course they’re capable of killing.

    At 1:45, they show clips of people enthusiastically supporting the idea of bringing back the bears. Not one voice in opposition, though? Maybe a little bias on display in the making of the video? I grew up in Libby, Montana. I can testify that the wildlife managers do a lot of bear augmentation there -- and aren't always as transparent about it as the video would imply. To add these bears to the ecosystem without at least the knowledge of the residents is wrong. In fairness, I believe they're a lot better about it now than they used to be. In November of 2019, a grizzly was captured and euthanized after it was found to have broken into a garage to feed on a harvested elk carcass. This was the third incident with this bear, with the other two involving another break-in, and an attack on a USFWS field assistant. This final incident occurred in a small neighborhood less than two miles from my parents' home, the house where I grew up. If you were to drive through that area, you'd never expect to see a grizzly. It's not remote. It's not like a grizzly showing up at a cabin in the wilderness. In all fairness, this video predates that incident, so I wouldn't expect them to mention it. The video mentions that a "hunter" shot Irene, but provides *_zero_* context. That's just shoddy journalism. WHY did the hunter shoot her? Was it a mistake in identification? (That's not an excuse -- I hold hunters responsible for knowing what they're doing.) Did they have a bad encounter? Did the shooter knowingly kill a grizzly in something other than self-defense? (That would make him a *_poacher_*, not a hunter.) The video doesn't provide any information about what happened. Irene, (aka Bear 286) was shot by an elk hunter who said she was threatening him. Why didn't the video say that? It literally took about three minutes to get more info on the incident, so I know it's not for lack of information. The Yaak and Cabinet Mountains areas are wilderness. They can be brushy and heavily wooded. Encounters with wildlife there can happen at short range, and we all know that startled bears - especially where cubs are involved - can react defensively. Those who have been in the Yaak/Cabinets know what I mean. The video makes it sound like the hunter shot Irene on a whim. Augmentation programs like the one in the Yaak-Cabinets suffer bear losses, with more bears dying of human-related causes than natural ones. But this includes bears that are hit by car and trucks, and collisions with trains (over two dozen trains per day travel the Kootenai River valley which separates the Cabinets from the Yaak). Others are poached, killed through misidentification by hunters, or euthanized when they become conditioned to human food. Some of the bears relocated from Glacier country to the Y/C system have also made their way back to Glacier. There's no guarantee that bears relocated from BC to the North Cascades won't do likewise. My point is that this is a complex issue, and this video has very clearly taken a side on it and really isn't treating the subject as objectively as it could. I'm not opposed to augmentation of bear populations, but I'm not a fan of biased journalism to promote it, either.

    • @brianstewart5632
      @brianstewart5632 7 месяцев назад

      That is actually not true dams make it much harder, animals tend to move along the riraprian corridor and up and down river networks, dams fragment that movement and for critters that are smaller completely block passages. Animals moved freely until we built stuff period.

Considered the most comprehensive analysis between farming and the environment, without meat and dairy consumption, global farm land use could be reduced by 75%.
